Frequently Asked Questions
Why is it free?
I built this for me and my wife. This is my way of giving back. Economically, HandsOnMoney does not have costs to operate - it works on your phone offline.
Why not open-source?
It's too early. For multiple reasons.
- I have a dream to build an ethical business around HandsOnMoney, and I'm not yet sure if open-sourcing it is the right call for now.
- I'm not ready to engage a community. It will significantly shift my focus away from building.
Rug-pulling plans?
Absolutely none. You own your data. HandsOnMoney provides CSV export and sync with GnuCash. I can't rug-pull you by design.
Feature monetization plans?
Yes for services. No for the app. By services I mean bank sync or quotes from paid data aggregators.
Ads?
No. Unless there is a demand for free services in exchange for seeing ads. But core principle will hold - app is free, services are paid (with money or attention). Honestly I don't like ads and I don't think this kind of monetization works well.
What about Security?
Your accounts, transactions, and budgets stay on your iPhone. The data is as secure as your phone.
What about Privacy?
HandsOnMoney collects anonymized analytics. Things like screen views, taps. But never capture names or balances of your accounts, transaction amounts, or descriptions. You can always request to delete all captured analytics and opt-out to stop sending it.
Is it yet another AI slop?
No. Building HandsOnMoney requires a lot of reflection, experimentation, and iteration. Unfortunately, AI can't reflect for you, thus the majority of the code is built manually. Automated tests are mostly generated but always reviewed.
